A Message from Chief Melissa R. Hyatt

The preservation of life is at the forefront of everything we do in law enforcement. Accountability, empathy and compassion are all vital parts of policing. As Chief, I am dedicated to ensuring our officers maintain proficient skill sets that are aligned with the high standards of honesty, integrity, equity and professionalism. To that end, I have implemented a duty to intervene and sanctity of life provision to our existing policy manual. The Baltimore County Police Department continues to train in de-escalation techniques, and utilizing the Integrating Communications, Assessment and Tactics (ICAT) program. Implicit bias training will become a standalone training requirement for all departmental members.

As Chief of Police, I made a commitment to the communities and residents we serve. Building and maintaining community trust is a cornerstone of policing and you have my promise that we will continue to listen and serve the citizens of Baltimore County.
