Arbutus Sustainable Community Designation Kickoff

We want to hear from you! The Department of Planning will officially kick off the Arbutus Sustainable Community designation effort on Wednesday, October 7, at 6 p.m. The public meeting will be held via Webex and will finish at 8 p.m.

The proposed Arbutus Sustainable Community designation will aim to outline a five-year plan for targeting state and local resources to promote environmentally, economically and socially responsible growth and development in existing older communities. The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development's Sustainable Communities Program is a place-based designation offering a comprehensive package of resources that support holistic strategies for community development, revitalization and sustainability. The proposed Arbutus Sustainable Community boundary will focus on the Arbutus commercial core and its connections to University of Maryland Baltimore County and the surrounding residential community.

The Department of Planning in collaboration with other County agencies will engage and work with the community in gathering input and feedback. The information gathered will provide a framework that will serve as the basis for obtaining the Arbutus Sustainable Community Designation.

Register for this meeting.

Ruxton: Malvern Avenue Bank Stabilization

Significant erosion along Malvern Avenue (from an unnamed tributary to Towson Run) will be addressed this fall. The Department of Public Works and Transportation’ contractors will stabilize embankments near Navy Road and Rolandvue Avenue in October and November in order to prevent future erosion. The job, estimated to cost $125,000, is expected to take four to five weeks and will require some road closures.

Information: Email engineering@baltimorecountymd.gov.

Pedestrian Study for Pikesville

Baltimore County has hired a consultant to perform a desk audit in Pikesville to assess pedestrian conditions and to learn if improvements can and should be made to enhance traffic engineering design for walkers, bicyclists and drivers. The consultant will be reviewing accident histories and the examination will include all facets of traffic control, including signals and crosswalks, and will take note of bicycle and pedestrian movements. One of the goals of the study, say engineers, is to create a context in which to safely coordinate crosswalks with present and future traffic conditions.

Water Line on Falls Road

The Department of Public Works and Transportation plans to replace 11,000 feet of water line on Falls Road between the Beltway and the City line. The project, which will cost approximately $14 million, will be advertised this fall for construction in early 2021. The replacement of the line—parts of which are more than 90 years old—will improve the reliability of the system. Much of the construction will be done between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., and ingress and egress will be coordinated and provided to all property owners within the project's limits.

Information: Email engineering@baltimorecountymd.gov.

Deck Replacement on Circle Road Bridge

Baltimore County’s contractors will begin work on the Circle Road Bridge over Roland Run this fall. Construction is scheduled to start before the New Year and to take about four weeks to complete. Traffic will not be interrupted during the work, according to engineers. Circle Road was in the news six years ago when the County replaced structural beams and when traffic was intermittently restricted during construction hours.

Information: Email engineering@baltimorecountymd.gov.

Water in the Dumbarton Neighborhood, Pikesville

Baltimore County is relining and cleaning more than 16,000 feet of water line under 27 streets in Dumbarton. The project, managed in two phases, is about 55 percent complete and will cost $4.2 million.

Information: Email engineering@baltimorecountymd.gov.
