Park Revitalization Project

The illustrative master plan provides an overall vision of park-wide improvements for the Rockdale Park open space to be developed and realized through a multi-phased implementation strategy of construction projects. 

Project Area A: Park and Courts, Phase 1

The conceptual Phase I site plan illustrates the replacement of an accessible ball field with three accessible pickleball courts and one accessible basketball court located adjacent to the existing parking lot and comfort station. A new network of concrete walks surrounding the courts will connect the existing circulation within the park as well as the neighboring Rolling Park Apartments, thus creating a cohesive and accessible pathway in the heart of the park. Minor modifications will be made within the community garden to mitigate the effects of an ongoing ponding water issue through a series of area drains that will be connected to stormwater management areas. Modifications to plots may be required and additional raised planters will be added to increase the quantity and availability of accessible plots.

• Community garden drainage
• Cast-in-place concrete walks

• Plantings including shade trees, ornamental trees, shrubs and perennials

To be implemented after Phase I:

• Three of six accessible pickleball courts
• Asphalt paths
• New and expanded parking area
• New park entrance gate, sign and low timber fence
• Pedestrian crossing to Mayfield community
• Re-milled entry drive
• Shade structures
• Wood chip trails

Cost

Medium to high—Demolition required to remove existing accessible ball diamond, earthwork to grade site to prepare for accessible courts, stormwater management for new hardscape program and elements.

Environmental Impact

Medium to high—Multiple built elements, impervious pathway network and minimal grading. Introduced vegetation will create shade, minimize heat, provide ecological and wildlife benefits and contribute to the aesthetics of the park.
