COVID-19 Coronavirus Updates and Guidance

The County is taking a number of actions to keep residents safe and minimize the spread of COVID-19. Find status information for County operations and services.

Become a Volunteer

To volunteer with a Baltimore County Recreation and Parks recreation council, you must first contact a local recreation office and pass a background check. Learn more about the Volunteer Background Check Program and volunteering, or follow the steps below to begin.

Volunteers must complete this process prior to each program season. There is no cost to applicants for the background check.

Step 1: Contact Your Local Recreation Office

Call or email your local recreation office to find out what volunteer opportunities are available. You don't have to volunteer close to home, but your local office is the best place to start.

Step 2: Obtain Application Materials

The recreation office will send you a packet of materials, including an access code to complete your online background check.

Step 3: Complete Online Background Check

Complete your background check with the login information provided in your packet. You must pass Baltimore County's background check before you're approved to work as a Recreation and Parks volunteer.

  • Public computer labs are located at the Randallstown Community Center, Sollers Point Multi-Purpose Center, Dundalk Community Center and all Baltimore County Public Library branches.
  • If you are unable to access the internet, please obtain the Volunteer Application forms from your community recreation office, recreation council or nature council.

Step 4: Verify Your Background Clearance

You will only be contacted if you do not pass the background check.

  • Disapproval: If a report comes back with information preventing you from volunteering, SSCI will contact you directly to report the findings or possibly request additional information by email or mail.
  • Approval: Volunteers who pass the check won't be contacted. However, you can verify your status on Baltimore County's Approved Volunteer Roster (PDF).

Once the application has been submitted in person or online, it takes up to two weeks to receive the results.
