Multifamily Single Stream Recycling Program

According to Maryland law, each property owner or manager of an apartment building, or a council of unit owners of a condominium with 10 or more units, is required to provide recycling for the residents of the dwelling units. Baltimore County is here to help multifamily communities comply with state law via the Multifamily Recycling Program, which will:

The program tote.

  • Provide education, outreach and training to multifamily property owners, managers, staff and residents 
  • Reduce waste, prevent food and unwanted items contamination 
  • Promote recycling at apartments and condominiums
  • Provide recycling tote bags to participating communities

If you are a property owner or manager, and do not currently have a multifamily recycling program in place, email William Olfson at wolfson@baltimorecountymd.gov.

Recyclable Items

Most of the below items are acceptable recyclables that can be mixed together in your recycling tote and community recycling dumpster:

  • Metal, aluminum and steel cans—This doesn't include aerosol cans that contained hazardous waste.

  • Cardboard—Flatten for more space.

  • Glass bottles and jars—All colors accepted.

  • Mixed paper products—Must be free of food waste, pet waste, oil or excessive dirt.

  • Plastics—Such as bottles, jars, jugs and tubs. Lids and labels accepted. Plastic bags are not recyclable.

How to Recycle Your materials

  1. Collect your clean recyclables in the reusable tote.
  2. Empty your tote into the recycling container at your apartment community.
  3. Refill and repeat.
