County Executive Olszewski Highlights Plans for Secure General Election, Urges Residents to Make their Plan to Vote

Secure Ballot Boxes at 13 Sites Across the County Beginning First Week of October, County Providing $100 Pay Incentive for Chief and General Election Judges

Amid the evolving impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski, Maryland Speaker of the House Adrienne Jones (D-10, Baltimore County), and Katie Brown, Director of the Baltimore County Board of Elections, today provided an update on the upcoming November 3 General Election, highlighting how residents can safely and securely cast their ballots by mail, ballot drop boxes, early voting, or on Election Day.

"Protecting the right to vote is fundamental to the strength and stability of our democracy. With less than 100 days until the General Election, we're urging residents to make their plan to vote now," said Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski. "We're thankful for all our state and local partners who remain committed to ensuring that Baltimore County's residents can vote safely and securely-so they can make their voices heard without compromising their health."

Election Judge Recruitment

Like other jurisdictions across the state, Baltimore County has faced challenges with election judge recruitment. While the County has currently recruited all 1,500 election judges required to staff voting centers throughout Early Voting and on Election Day, local officials are continuing to recruit election judges from all parties to serve as substitute judges.

To ensure the County remains competitive amid that recruitment process, and in recognition of the challenging circumstances surrounding an election during a pandemic, County Executive Olszewski and Director Brown today announced the County is providing a $100 pay incentive to enhance existing pay rates for all election judges. "We're working around the clock to ensure voting is safe and secure-no matter how you choose to cast your ballot," Brown said. "Remember, to vote by mail, please request your ballot now. Beginning the first week of October, you can safely drop your ballot at any location. Our staff will continue to work with health officials to put proper safety measures in place to protect both your vote and health."

"This is a vital moment in our history. Not only are we voting for the next President of the United States, but we do so during the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote," said Speaker Jones. "It's imperative that we do everything we can to make our voices heard and participate in the electoral process. The future of our communities are at stake. So, make sure you request your ballot now and make plans for you and your families to vote this fall."

Voting By Mail

To date, the Baltimore County Board of Elections has received 65,592 requests for mail-in ballots. According to Boards of Elections officials, ballots will be in the mail beginning the first week of October.

The Board is currently projecting a turnout of 75 percent of registered voters-more than 419,000 residents.

Residents who receive their ballot by mail may submit their ballot by the following methods:

Hand deliver your ballot. You must deliver it to the local board of elections by 8 p.m. on November 3, 2020, or you may take it to an early voting center, an Election Day vote center, or a ballot drop off box, or a polling place before the polls close.

Mail your ballot. If you mail your voted ballot, make sure that the envelope is postmarked on or before general election day (November 3, 2020). Your voted ballot must be received by your local board of elections by 10 a.m. on November 13, 2020.

Drop your ballot at a ballot drop off box. Voters will have an option to submit their ballots via ballot boxes that will be placed at 13 locations throughout the County.

Ballot Drop Boxes

Baltimore County is providing 13 secure ballot drop boxes, one at each of the 11 Early Voting locations and additional drop boxes at the Board of Elections office in Hunt Valley and at Hereford High School. Drop boxes will be under 24-hour security. Residents can drop their ballot at any location.

In the coming days, Baltimore County will release a map-based tool to allow residents to review voting locations and find the location closest to them.

The deadline to request a ballot by mail is October 20. To request your ballot, residents can visit the Maryland Board of Elections Mail-in Voting page.
