Warning: Recent Phone Scam Details

The Baltimore County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a phone scam where callers are attempting to collect a fine in lieu of arrest, due to identity theft, failing to report for jury duty or other offenses. The caller tells victims that they can avoid arrest by purchasing a prepaid debit card, such as a “Green Dot” card, gift card or money order. Victims may be asked to read the card numbers over the phone to satisfy the fine, or meet the caller at a courthouse or other designated location.

The scammer uses several tactics to sound credible, including providing badge numbers, names of actual law enforcement or other government officials, and courthouse addresses. If you believe that you were the victim of this scam, report the incident to local law enforcement.

Tips to Protect Yourself

  • Sheriff’s Deputies will never ask for cash, credit, debit card, gift card numbers, wire transfers, bank routing numbers or money orders for any purpose.
  • Never give any of your personal or financial information to unknown callers.
  • Authenticate the call and verify the court order given by the caller by contacting the Clerk for the Circuit Court at 410-887-2601.
  • Write down all the information requested from the scammer and contact law enforcement.
  • Don’t trust caller ID. The scammer can manipulate names and spoof telephone numbers of government agencies or courts.

History of the Sheriff's Office Patch

The Baltimore County Sheriff's Office shoulder patch.

One of the official landmarks of the 1814 Battle of North Point is the Daniel Wells and Henry G. McComas Battle monument, which memorializes these soldiers' heroism in that 1814 battle. Wells and McComas were two of the Great Defenders of Baltimore. The Office of the Sheriff noted the historical significance of their service and this monument by placing an image of that monument on the shoulder patch. This has been a proud part of the uniform since its inception.
