Green Infrastructure Division
The Green Infrastructure Division designs natural and semi-natural land features for stormwater management. Green infrastructure plays a key role in managing stormwater and reducing the risk of flooding.
Traditional urban/suburban drainage systems often involve the rapid conveyance of rainwater through pipes and into centralized storm drain networks, which discharge into streams and eventually the Bay. Green infrastructure practices aim to:
-
Mimic natural, hydrological processes by capturing precipitation where it falls and temporarily storing the water, and slowly releasing it into existing drainage conveyance systems.
-
Aid infiltration into the ground, allowing water to be naturally filtered and for groundwater reservoirs to be recharged.
-
Reduce the impact of urbanization on streams and rivers
-
Promote sustainability
Therefore, the projects undertaken by the Green Infrastructure Division seek to attenuate flooding via dispersed detention storage within the drainage shed.

Storm Drainage Assets Management (SDAM) System
The SDAM system was designed to monitor and assess storm drainage across the County. It integrates advanced GIS mapping, field data collection, and predictive analytics to help prioritize drainage projects and upgrades. One of the ways the SDAM system prioritizes which storm drainage assets need attention is through public feedback. To voice a concern about a specific storm drain asset, email engineering@baltimorecountymd.gov or call 410-887-8797. Note that this feedback is specific to storm drain assets that fail in their function, despite being otherwise clean and in good condition.
