On December 8, 1978, at approximately 4:20 a.m., Baltimore County Police received a call for a found body in the area of Norris Lane and Trappe Road 21222 in Precinct 12 Dundalk. Police arrived and found the body of an unidentified female at the location. She was pronounced deceased at the scene and it was discovered that she had been strangled.

On December 9, 1978, detectives were able to positively identify the female as 52-year-old Susana Thatcher. She had been reported missing by her daughter on the evening of December 8, 1978. She was last seen by family members in the area of Eastern and Dundalk avenues in the evening on December 7, 1978.

Susana Thatcher telephoned a friend just a few hours before she was found deceased. She had indicated to the friend that she was going to travel to their apartment in the Mt. Washington area of Baltimore City. Susana Thatcher was not driving that night and it was unknown how she may have been attempting to travel.
