African American Historic Survey Districts

Baltimore County African Americans played an important and undeniable part in the development of the County. The history of the African American settlements in Baltimore County began as early as 1798 and continued well into the middle part of the 20th century.

The variety of building types were identified as part of the African American Thematic Report (PDF) prepared in August of 2003. The study documented 39 settlements countywide, included residential buildings, churches, cemeteries, schools, and social halls. More in-depth information on the identified sites can be found below.

Understanding that there may be additional sites that were not identified in the 2003 study, the County staff welcomes any new information that is available.
