Election Judges and Closers

To become an Election Judge or Closer, you must be a registered voter in Maryland. You are compensated for your time. Please call the Board of Elections at 410-887-0982 for more information.

JUDGES

The Baltimore County Board of Elections is seeking motivated people, who can endure long hours (5:45 a.m. to 10 p.m.), to work as Election Judges for the upcoming elections. Per Election Day, you can earn:

  • $250 as an Election Judge
  • $300 as a Provisional Judge/Same-Day Registration (SDR) Judge
  • $350 as a Chief Judge

You will also be compensated $50 for attending a mandatory training session after you serve on Election Day. To receive the $50 training compensation, the attendee must work the assigned day or days of election.

  • You must be a registered voter in Maryland.
  • You must be able to withstand at least a 15-hour day of work and read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • You must attend a mandatory training session and be willing to follow instructions concerning election laws and the overall duties of staffing a polling place.

CLOSERS

Closers assist in closing the voting precinct and returning materials. Working hours for Closers are approximately 6 to 9 p.m. on Election Day, not including drive time from the voting precinct to the regional collection site. You can earn $100 for your service as a Closer on Election Day. You will also be compensated $25 for attending a mandatory training session after you serve on Election Day.

  • You must be a registered voter in Maryland.
  • You must assist in precinct set-up the night before the election.
  • You must be able to speak clearly, listen well, and be friendly and welcoming.
  • You must be able to follow procedures, including written and verbal instructions.
  • Each Closer is required to drive to the voting precinct and the regional collection site on Election Day. The vehicle must be able to transport the election materials. Public transportation, taxi cabs, ride sharing services (Uber, Lyft, etc.), motorcycles, bicycles, scooters and mopeds are not an acceptable means of transportation for this purpose.
  • A cell phone is required for communication with the Board of Elections.
