Department of Public Works and Transportation Announces Services Changes & Waste Reduction Tips for Thanksgiving Holiday

November 22, 2024

TOWSON – As Thanksgiving approaches, the Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPWT) encourages residents to reduce waste, dispose of fats, oils, and grease properly and plan for holiday service changes.

Thanksgiving Service Changes
In observance of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, the following service changes(link is external) will be in effect:

Landfill and drop-off centers: The landfill and drop-off centers will be closed on Thanksgiving.
Trash and recycling collections: Trash and recycling will not be collected on Thanksgiving. Collections will resume on a slide schedule(link is external), with services delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.
CountyRide: CountyRide services will not operate on Thanksgiving.
The Loop: The Loop Circulator will not operate on Thanksgiving.

Reduce Waste This Thanksgiving
While preparing for the holiday, following are some easy ways for residents to decrease waste:
Plan a menu: Shop with a plan to avoid food waste. Turn leftovers into delicious meals like soups or casseroles.
Choose reusables: Replace single-use plates, cups, and utensils with reusable or compostable options.
Compost food scraps: Compost fruit peels, vegetable scraps, and other organic materials.
Recycle right: Recycle clean glass, aluminum cans and cardboard. For more on accepted materials visit DPWT’s Solid Waste Management site(link is external).

Fats, Oils, and Grease Disposal Reminder
Improper disposal of fats, oils and grease can cause costly blockages in pipes. To properly dispose of FOGs:
Cool: Allow fats, oils, and grease to cool after cooking.
Contain: Pour the cooled fats, oils and grease into a container, such as an empty jar or can, and seal it.
Dispose: Place the sealed container in the trash. Never pour fats, oils and grease down the drain.

DPWT is committed to supporting residents with sustainable practices this Thanksgiving.
