Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

Baltimore County Animal Services offers the Healthy Pet Package at two surgical locations. All appointments must be prescheduled, and prepaid if applicable.

  • 13800 Manor Road, Baldwin, Maryland 21013
  • 7702 Dunmanway, Dundalk, Maryland 21222

How do I request an appointment?

Request an appointment online or call the scheduling service directly at 410-887-2938. Due to the high number of calls, please allow up to three business days for our staff to return your call. If you're not eligible for a free procedure through one of our grant programs, you must make a payment before your appointment can be verified. You will receive a separate email confirming your payment was processed.

Don't come to the facility without an email confirmation of your appointment date and time.

How will I know if my appointment was confirmed?

The online process is an appointment request, not a guarantee. When your request has been accepted, you'll receive a confirmation email. If you haven't received a confirmation email, your pet’s appointment hasn't been confirmed.

Please make sure you and your pet meet our eligibility requirements before submitting an appointment request. Our staff will review your request to ensure that eligibility requirements are met. If you or your pet doesn't meet our requirements, your application will not be accepted and we will call you to discuss.

I can’t remember my appointment date or I need to change it. What can I do?

The easiest way to access your information is in your confirmation email. If you can’t locate this or if you need a different date, please call the scheduling service directly at 410-887-2938. This number is answered Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Due to the high volume of calls, please allow three business days for a reply.

Should I bring my pet’s vaccine history or veterinary records to my appointment?

Yes, bring what you have and our veterinary staff will determine which vaccinations your pet can receive as part of our program. If you don’t have prior medical records for your pet, that’s okay. Your pet will receive a complete physical exam and the full Healthy Pet Package.

If you don't provide records at the time of drop off, your pet will receive the full vaccine package. Please note that a complete rabies certificate is required for proof of prior vaccination and receipts or invoices are not considered proper verification of rabies vaccination.

What should I do before my pet’s surgery?

Please don't feed your pet any food or treats after midnight the night before surgery. Your pet may still drink water. Please bring your cat in a carrier (one cat per carrier) and your dog on a non-retractable leash. Please arrive at the surgery location by 8 a.m. The staff will not admit clients into the building before 8 a.m.

Can I have someone else drop off my pet?

No. The owner of the pet needs to drop off the pet in order to sign the proper consent and provide a medical history.

What time can I pick up my pet?

All pets are discharged to their owners the same day as surgery. Exact pick up times will be assigned in the morning at drop-off but will not be before 3 p.m. If you're unable to pick up your pet from the surgical center at the specified time, he or she will be transferred to our main location in Baldwin. You will be required to redeem your pet from the shelter.

What do I need to know post-surgery?

After surgery, you'll be sent home with detailed care instructions. To give you an idea of what to expect, we also offer a general copy of our home care instructions (PDF).

What is considered a “known medical illness”?

This would be any pre-existing condition that would put your pet at increased anesthetic risk or may require a complicated surgery. This includes, but is not limited to: heart murmurs, seizure disorders, retained testicles, kidney disease, upper respiratory infections, and feline leukemia.

Can I get vaccines for my pet without the surgery?

Baltimore County Animal Services does not offer the vaccine portion of the Healthy Pet Package without the spay or neuter procedure. If your pet is already altered or you do not wish to have your pet altered, please contact your private veterinarian.

We do offer low-cost rabies vaccinations and microchipping at our public clinics.

Is this service for animals other than dogs and cats?

No. Our spay and neuter services are only for dogs and cats. Please check our eligibility requirements to ensure your pet will qualify.

I don’t have a client ID number. Do I need one to request an appointment?

The client ID number is not a required field to schedule. If you qualify for a free procedure through the Government Assistance Program, you must enter your nine-digit number found on any mailing you receive from the program. If you do not qualify for this service, please leave the field blank and proceed to request an appointment.
