About the Villages

Villages are community-driven, volunteer-powered organizations dedicated to strengthening neighborhoods and supporting older adults who wish to age in place. Unlike physical structures, Villages operate on the principle of "neighbors helping neighbors," creating networks of care and mutual support.

Villages are tailored to the needs and interests of their members, and:

  • Combat social isolation through activities and programs.
  • Foster caring communities where assistance flows reciprocally.
  • Build trust, interpersonal connections and a sense of belonging.
  • Empower older adults to age with dignity and independence.

Villages are typically funded by modest membership fees, donations and grants, ensuring sustainability.

Services

Each Village customizes its services to meet the unique needs of its community. Examples include:

  • Transportation: Rides to appointments, shopping or Village programs
  • Home Maintenance: Light household tasks or simple repairs
  • Tech Support: Help with devices, virtual meeting setup and more
  • Social Activities: Friendly visits, group programs, exercise and education
  • Wellness Support: Meal delivery, note-taking at doctor visits and more

How to form a village

Starting a Village typically follows these steps:

  1. A community member learns about Villages and gathers like-minded neighbors.
  2. An exploratory committee surveys local needs and resources.
  3. The committee drafts a business plan and selects services.
  4. The Village recruits volunteers and begins operations.
