A 98-year-old woman died in last night's house fire in Cockeysville.

The victim has been identified by Baltimore County Police as Wanda Mary Shattuck of the 800 block of West Padonia Rd., 21030, where the fire occurred.

Fire units were dispatched at 11:35 p.m. for a dwelling fire that was fully involved when the first engine (Engine 503, Chestnut Ridge VFC) arrived. Neighbors reported that an elderly woman was inside the home.

Fire crews entered the house, a single-story rancher, and located the victim. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This was an aggressive fire exacerbated by high winds. At 11:52 p.m., Fire commanders evacuated all fire personnel from the structure due to unsafe and deteriorating conditions. From that point, fire crews used defensive operations to fight the fire. The fire, which destroyed the home, was knocked down at 12:46 a.m.

Baltimore County Police fire investigators continue to investigate the cause of this fire.

This one-alarm fire required additional apparatus, including a tanker strike team to provide additional water. About 30 pieces of equipment responded.
