UPDATE (April 4, 2019 2 p.m.)

Baltimore County Police continue to work to seek closure for Maria Popal’s family in the hit-and-run death of their daughter nearly two weeks ago.

Maria Popal, child killed by a hit and run driverInvestigators from the Crash Investigation Team have obtained additional surveillance video from surrounding businesses that may contain images of the suspect vehicle, believed to be a 1990-1993 Honda Accord, as depicted in previously released video. The Honda would have incurred damage to the front passenger side area of the vehicle when it struck Maria and her aunt.

Maria turned 12-years-old just a month before she was hit and killed while crossing North Rolling Road with her pregnant aunt a little after 9 p.m. Friday night, March 22. Her aunt, a 32-year-old woman, continues to recover from the crash following her release from Sinai Hospital.

Maria was looking forward to enrolling in 5th grade as she had just returned home after spending time with family in Afghanistan. She was the eldest child and only daughter of her parents, leaving behind two younger brothers, and was enjoying being reunited with her family. Maria loved math and was one of the highest rated students in her previous elementary school. Maria loved art, flowers, and riding her bike. She had a bright future ahead of her.

Investigators are hoping that anyone with information about this tragic event will come forward immediately to help Maria’s family find closure by contacting police.
