UPDATE (July 13, 2020 12:12 p.m.):

Detectives are investigating the injury caused to a 22-month-old girl last night on Derby Shire Circle as a shooting.

The incident appears to have stemmed from a domestic incident between the child’s mother and ex-boyfriend during which he assaulted the woman. Another resident of the home, an adult man, attempted to intervene and stop the assault at which time the suspect produced a handgun. A struggle for the gun ensued, during which the male victim was struck with the gun causing an injury to his upper body. The preliminary investigation indicates that the gun discharged during the struggle, causing a graze wound to the child. The suspect left the gun at the scene and fled the home but was apprehended by responding officers after a brief foot pursuit.

The suspect’s identity will be released later today following formal charges.
