Baltimore County’s Job Connector has partnered with Amazon to host several upcoming hiring events in September for jobs at the new Amazon Fulfillment Center in Sparrows Point. The company is immediately hiring full-time associates to work alongside Amazon Robotics to pick, pack and ship  customer items, such as home goods, toys and books.

Interested candidates must first complete an application online at amazon.com/baltimorejobs. At that time, candidates may schedule a time and location for their in-person interview. The hiring events are invite-only, no walk-ins will be accepted.

“Amazon is hiring more than 1,500 full-time jobs, with great benefits starting on day one,” said Will Anderson, director of the Baltimore County Department of Economic and Workforce Development.

“We want to put a big Amazon smile on a lot of faces. There’s nothing like knowing you just got a new job,” said Baltimore County Executive Don Mohler

  • You must be 18 years or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent to qualify for employment as an Amazon fulfillment associate.
  • Before arriving at the hiring event, all applicants must fill out an application online at amazon.com/baltimorejobs.  Once you receive an acceptance confirmation, you will be able to schedule an in-person interview at the hiring event that works best for your schedule.
  • Applicants attending Job Connector events should be registered in the Maryland Workforce Exchange (MWE). Visit mwejobs.maryland.gov to register.

Amazon Fulfillment Center at Sparrows Point

Amazon is delivering more than 1,500 full-time jobs to the company’s new 855,000 square foot fulfillment center at Tradepoint Atlantic in Sparrows Point. Associates will work alongside Amazon Robotics to pick, pack and ship customer items such as electronics, books, housewares and toys.

The data is in. According to the Jobs of the Future report, nine key industries drive 50 percent of Baltimore County’s employment, and will account for 75 percent of the County’s job growth through 2024.

Our local economy is vibrant, balanced by both stability and dynamic growth across a broad range of industry sectors:

Baltimore County’s jobs future looks bright over the next decade

More than 17,000 jobs are coming with the redevelopment of Sparrows Point. According to a 2016 study by Sage Policy Group, Tradepoint Atlantic’s redevelopment at Sparrows Point will create 10,000 direct jobs, and 7,000 indirect jobs by 2025, primarily in transportation, distribution and logistics.

With over 60,000 healthcare workers, Baltimore County’s healthcare industry generates $3 billion in worker income.  Baltimore County is home to more than 2,700 healthcare employers including five major medical centers.

Baltimore County serves as a major location for corporate headquarters and branch office operations, with a strong base of 4,500 professional and business services companies. Employment growth in the professional and business services sector has generally outpaced overall employment growth in the County and is expected to continue through 2024.

The Information Technology (IT) industry is the fastest growing of Baltimore County’s nine priority industries.  Overall employment in IT occupations increased by 46 percent (2001-2015) and is projected to increase by 19 percent through 2024.

The construction industry is one of Baltimore County’s leading industries – accounting for six percent of the County’s overall employment.  Although hit by the recession, construction is projected to continue to grow through 2024. Employment projections indicate a bright outlook, spurred by strong job growth from major construction and development projects throughout the Greater Baltimore region.

Baltimore County accounts for 14 percent of Maryland’s manufacturing jobs and is home to 36 percent of the Baltimore Region’s top 25 manufacturers.  More than 500 manufacturing employers benefit from Baltimore County’s strategic location and integrated supply chain with distribution networks.

Office and Administrative Support occupations account for 11 percent of all Baltimore County employment.  Support Service Occupations across all industries are critical to the daily operation, administration, and management of business, and can be an entry-point to any of the industries.

This is all great news for Baltimore County…but what does it all mean for the average job seeker? The recent graduate? A business owner who needs to hire and train their workforce?

“This toolkit serves to guide Baltimore County’s workforce system with a framework and resources to develop and sustain effective career pathways systems and programs,” said Will Anderson, director of the Baltimore County Department of Economic and Workforce Development.

The world of job search and networking is not the same as it was five years ago, or even two years ago. While job boards and traditional networking still exist, today many candidates are using social media to find their next position. Two-thirds of 18-34 year olds found their last job through a social network, according to the Aberdeen Group.

Being social, virtually speaking, is the new way in the field of job searching, networking and workforce recruitment. Job seekers that know and wisely use the top social media platforms in their industries are cultivating professional brands that reach the vast, global, job market.

Ninety-four percent of HR recruiters are active on LinkedIn, but only 36 percent of candidates are on LinkedIn, according to Jobvite.

Job seekers should create a professional presence on social media to stand out, and consistently update their profiles to expand their network of online professional contacts and broadcast their job search goals. LinkedIn, in particular, has a setting that will alert recruiters that you are actively looking for a job, so it is even more important to keep your information and network up to date. Organizations also rely on their social network followers to share their job postings, creating an even larger network of potential candidates.

Job seekers who want to learn how to utilize the power of social media for their job search can enroll in a free Social Media Strategies Career Development workshop offered monthly at all three Baltimore County Career Center locations. Participants learn about the importance of social media and specific strategies on how to use various platforms to attract and research employers.
