To Ensure Collection, Trees Must be Set out No Later than January 20

The collection of live Christmas trees for recycling in Baltimore County will take place over a two-week period, beginning Monday, January 15, 2018. Because Christmas tree collection dates will vary from place to place, residents must have trees set out no later than Saturday, January 20 to ensure collection.

Pick-up Location Change for Residents with Alley Collection

New this year, residents should place trees out for pick-up at the same location where they would normally place trash and recycling for collection. Specifically, residents with alley collection are instructed to place their Christmas trees in the alley, where they normally set out trash and recycling. This change is in response to requests from the community and it improves operational efficiency.

As usual, residents must follow these rules when placing their Christmas trees out to be recycled:

  • Only set out live (not artificial) trees.
  • Set out the tree only (no lights, decorations, tinsel, bags, tree stands, etc.).

Baltimore County collectors will pick up Christmas trees in standard trash/recycling trucks, and deliver them to County facilities to be chipped and later used as mulch. Baltimore County residents who live in an apartment or condominium should follow their property manager’s rules when recycling their Christmas trees.

Residents who wish to drop off Christmas trees themselves may do so starting Tuesday, December 26, 2017. Christmas trees (no lights, decorations, tinsel, bags, tree stands, etc.) may be taken to any one of the County’s three drop-off locations. For directions to the County’s drop-off centers, residents may visit the Bureau of Solid Waste Management website or call 410-887-2000.

Offices, Most Facilities Closed January 1

Baltimore County government offices will be closed on Monday, January 1 in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday, including Health Department clinics, Circuit and District Courts, senior centers, drop-off centers and the landfill; and CountyRide vans will not operate. See below for details on library hours, and trash and recycling collection and facilities schedules during the holiday weekend.

Library Schedules

All branches of the Baltimore County Public Library will be open regular Sunday hours on New Year’s Eve and will be closed on Monday, January 1 for New Year’s Day.

No Trash or Recycling Collections on New Year’s Day

The impact of holidays varies among Baltimore County collection schedules. County residents should consult their particular collection schedule to learn when materials should be set out during weeks that contain a collection holiday. Schedules are available for download on the Bureau of Solid Waste Management’s website and may also be requested by calling 410-887-2000. New 2018 through 2021 schedules are being mailed to residents of single family homes this month, and will be available for download on the County’s website by January 1.

Collections of all types may occur later than usual during the last week of December and the first week of January, because more material must be collected in fewer collection days. If a collection does not occur on the scheduled day during this period of time, the materials should be left out until collection occurs.

Baltimore County offices and trash and recycling drop-off facilities, including the Eastern Sanitary Landfill in White Marsh, will be closed on Monday, January 1. County offices will be open from December 26 through December 29, and all three drop-off facilities will be open with regular operating hours from December 26 through December 30.
