Present Day

  • 2024—The Department celebrates its 150th anniversary on April 11.
  • 2023
    • Retired Colonel Robert McCullough is appointed as the first African-American Chief of the Baltimore County Police Department (BCoPD).
    • Shotspotter gunshot detection is rolled out as a pilot project in two precincts (Wilkens and Essex).
  • 2022
    • Colonel Dennis Delp is named Chief of Police.
    • The Police Accountability Act goes into effect.
  • 2021—The Maryland General Assembly passes the Maryland Police Accountability Act of 2021.
  • 2020—The COVID-19 pandemic affects policing: nonsworn staff are required to work from home.

2020 to 2010 

  • 2019
    • Melissa Hyatt sworn in on June 17 as the first female Police Chief for the department.
    • Ford SUVs become the major patrol vehicle. 
    • Uniform changes to blue BDU type pants, a blue shirt with ballistic vest worn over the shirt and a baseball cap.
  • 2018
    • Animal Abuse Team begins for investigation of animal abuse, neglect and cruelty.
    • Mobile Crisis Team expanded to 24 hours to provide behavioral and mental health services. 
  • 2017—Mobile fingerprint scanner introduced.
  • 2016
    • Body-Worn Camera (BWC) program implemented. 
    • ShareFile system implemented, which allows search warrant applications to be entered electronically to court.
  • 2015
    • BWC program piloted.
    • Taser-Cam system introduced, which equips each taser with a camera that activates when deployed. 
  • 2014
    • In-car computers linked to school security cameras.
    • Focus on increased use of social media for information sharing.
    • Automated Crash Reporting System implemented to electronically submit accident reports in real time.
  • 2013
    • Computer-based incident reporting (Field Based Reporting) is introduced.
    • The Department's first stand-up electronic T-3 vehicles are deployed.

2010 to 2000

  • 2007
    • The Violent Crime Unit is created to investigate nonfatal shootings and other serious assaults.
    • Three new helicopters are acquired.
    • A new station is opened for Precinct 8 Parkville.
  • 2006
    • The Gang Enforcement Team is created to fight growth of gangs in the County.
    • A new station is opened for Precinct 4 Pikesville.
    • Precinct 3's name is changed from Garrison to Franklin.
  • 2005—A Police substation is opened as part of the Stembridge Community Center in Precinct 11 Essex.
  • 2004—Randallstown substation is opened.
  • 2003—Precinct 8 Parkville is restored as an independent command.
  • 2002
    • Construction of new PAL centers means that, for the first time, there is a center in every precinct.
    • The Department joins the CODIS database allowing it to share and access DNA information to identify suspects.
    • The agency is reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
    • The Computer Crime Unit and its mission are expanded and it is renamed the Digital and Multimedia Evidence Unit.
  • 2001—The new Towson Precinct opened, replacing the one built in 1927.
