Primary and Contingent Beneficiaries

Your life insurance will be paid to the beneficiaries named:

  • Beneficiaries can include people, your estate or an organization, such as a charity.
  • You must designate a primary beneficiary—the person who will receive a benefit upon your death.
  • You have the option of designating contingent beneficiaries—those who receive a benefit in the event that all of the designated primary beneficiaries are deceased at the time of your death.
  • If you name two or more beneficiaries in a class (primary or contingent), two or more surviving beneficiaries will share equally, unless you provide for unequal shares.

Important Note

This beneficiary change is limited to your County life insurance plans only. Other plans that you have require a separate beneficiary change, including beneficiary elections for:

  • Employee Retirement System
  • Deferred Compensation
  • Pension
