12th Annual Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit!

5K Run–Walk and 1-Mile Walk a Great Success

The 12th Annual 2018 Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5K Run–Walk and 1-Mile Walk to support older adult health and fitness was held on Sunday, September 16, 2018. In total, 1,002 individuals registered for the event.

Awards

This year's winners are:

  • Largest Regional Senior Center Team: Bykota Breeze with 199 team members
  • Largest Community Senior Center Team: Reisterstown Road Runners with 79 team members
  • Most Money Raised by a Team: Edgemere Senior Center with $741 in donations
  • Most Money Raised by an Individual: Jeanie W. from Edgemere, who raised $585

5K Results and Stats

All of the 5K race results can be found on Charm City Run's website. Of the 233 individuals who participated in the 5K event, 149 (or 64 percent) were age 60 and older. The youngest participant was age 8, while the oldest was 89. The median age of the group was 64. This event truly embodies the Department of Aging's vision of living longer and living well.

Event Evaluation

An online evaluation form, sent to all registrants who provided an email address, was completed by 119 individuals.  Overall, 96 percent had a positive view of the event with 59 percent of the respondents rating the 12th Annual 2018 Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5K Run–Walk and 1-Mile Walk as excellent, 37 percent rating it as good, and four percent saying it was fair.

The majority of respondents indicated they learned about the event from a senior center (78 percent), while 15 percent heard about it from The Time of Your Life Digest or word-of-mouth. Between five and seven percent found out about it from the Charm City Run website, the Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! website, Facebook, the county website or through email. Almost three-quarters of respondents to the survey had participated in the event previously, while 68 percent said they were at the event this year.

Levels of satisfaction with various aspects of the event were very high, with over 90 percent of respondents being satisfied or very satisfied with the parking, quality of T-shirt, refreshments, T-shirt design, application and website information, race-day registration and 1-mile course. Between 80 and 90 percent were satisfied or very satisfied with the DJ and music, packet pick-up, warm-up, door prizes, awards ceremony, online registration process, medals, falls prevention activities and vendor and sponsor area. Three-quarters were satisfied with the 5K race course, swag bag and finisher's ribbons. Seventy percent of respondents indicated they had stayed to attend the awards ceremony.

The majority of respondents strongly agreed or agreed with the following statements:

  • I participated in this event because I support BCDA and its mission (94 percent)
  • The 5K route was clearly marked with signs (93 percent)
  • The results were accurate (93 percent)
  • The entry fee was reasonable and in line with similar races (92 percent)
  • The fundraising purpose of this event was clear (86 percent)
  • The results were presented in a timely manner (83 percent)
  • The 5K course was scenic (82 percent)
  • I participated in this event because of its fundraising purpose (78 percent)
  • The 1-mile route was clearly marked with signs (77 percent)
  • The DJ and announcements added greatly to the experience (70 percent)
  • The Falls Prevention area added greatly to the experience (60 percent)

Less than 60 percent agreed or strongly agreed with the following statements:

  • I preferred the 2018 5K course over previous years' routes (58 percent)
  • I registered because I wanted to support the sponsors (57 percent)
  • The 5K should have split timers (50 percent)
  • I would prefer the 1-mile to be in a different location (19 percent)
  • I would be willing to pay more to have chip timing (18 percent)
  • I registered because of the $100 prize drawings (10 percent)
  • I registered because of the additional swag bag (5 percent)

Eighty-four percent said they were very likely (63 percent) or likely (21 percent) to attend next year's Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5K Run and Walk and 1-Mile Walk. Furthermore, 58 percent are very likely and 23 percent are likely to tell their friends, family and associates about the race to encourage their participation next year.

Regarding the location of the event next year, 46 percent indicated the event should stay at CCBC-Essex, 45 percent want it in the north area of Baltimore County, 22 percent prefer the west side of the county and 16 percent would like it on the east side. The most preferred month for the event was September (96 percent) with October following second (91 percent). The summer months were not desired by the respondents.

Of those who registered but did not attend the actual event (32 percent), the reasons included:

  • I only registered to support my center's efforts to win awards
  • I am not able to run or walk that distance
  • It was too far to travel
  • I did not want to attend on a Sunday
  • I wasn't feeling well that day
  • I just wanted the T-shirt
  • I thought the weather was going to be poor
  • I was out of town
