What is Sustainability?
Sus-tain-a-bil-ity (suh-steyn-uh-bil-i-tee), n. Meeting the needs of the present in a responsible manner without compromising the ability of current and future generations to meet their own needs.
Office of Sustainability
The Office of Sustainability was created within the Executive Office in April of 2008 to develop and advance a comprehensive sustainability strategy for Baltimore County. Additionally, the office was asked to work with local, state, and federal agencies involved in sustainability initiatives and energy conservation measures. The County Executive also established the Sustainability Network (SN), an advisory committee of citizens, private sector, and County representatives. The Sustainability Network’s task is to develop recommendations for a sustainability strategy for Baltimore County.
Mission
- To develop a permanent Sustainability Policy and Program for Baltimore County.
- To improve environmental awareness and sustainable practices in government operations.
- To work with the private sector to improve environmental practices.
- To work with Baltimore citizens to implement best management practices for energy conservation and sustainable living.
Charge
The Office of Sustainability was first charged with the task of developing a sustainable strategy for County government operations. The strategy would then act as a framework for the second part of the office’s charge, the development of a community-wide sustainability strategy.
