Health Education and Screening
Through the Healthscope program, health care professionals offer programs emphasizing wellness and disease prevention at senior centers throughout the county. Topics include:
- vision screening
- diabetes self-management
- stress management
- hearing screenings
- weight management
- cancer education
Blood pressure screenings are held on a regular basis at most senior centers.
Take Charge Of Your Health, Living Well
This program is being offered free of charge by the Baltimore County Department of Aging (BCDA) in partnership through a partnership with the Maryland Department of Aging, National Council of Aging and sanofi aventis U.S. The workshops are for people 18 years and older with chronic conditions or diabetes. The program is modeled after the Chronic Disease Self Management Program (CDSMP) and Diabetes Self Management Program (DSMP) from Stanford University. Teach Others: "Take Charge of Your Health" Self Management Programs
Would you like to provide valuable information to individuals living with a chronic condition? Would you lead a class if given a prepared script? Would you like to supply a much needed resource to individuals struggling with a chronic illness such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and more?
Baltimore County Department of Aging (BCDA) is looking for volunteers to facilitate our Living Well...Take Charge of Your Health workshops, otherwise known as the Chronic Disease Self Management Program. The program, developed by Stanford University, is specifically designed to be led by volunteers, regardless of prior experience. Current and former health care professionals are strongly encouraged to apply, but all are welcome. For more information, please call the Healthscope Office at 410-887-3423.
Living Better: Understanding Your Health
“Living Better: Understanding Your Health” is a health fair sponsored by Worthington Personal Physicians, that will feature primary and specialty care physicians who will conduct informational sessions, free health screenings, and will answer questions regarding health maintenance and prevention. The next Health Fair is Tuesday, May 22, 2012 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Reisterstown Senior Center, 12035 Reisterstown Road - 21136. Shingles Information Sessions / Shingles Vaccination Clinics
Baltimore County Department of Aging, in partnership with Halethorpe Pharmacy and Independent Drug, is offering shingles shingles information sessions and shingles vaccination clinics.
Hearing Screening and Oral Cancer Screenings
Participants can sign up for a free Hearing Screening and/or an Oral Cancer Screening offered by Baltimore County Health Department, Clinical Services at Baltimore County Senior Centers.
Bone Density Screenings
Find out if you are at risk for osteoporosis by participating in a free bone density screening, provided by St. Joseph's Medical Center, offered at area BCDA senior centers.
Kidneys Evaluate Yours (KEY) Screening
The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland in partnership with Baltimore County Department of Aging is offering free health screenings for the early detection and intervention of kidney problems thorough a KEY screening. A free screening designed to identify early markers for high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease will be held at two BCDA senior centers in 2012.
Transitioning To Medicare
Turning 65 years of age or disabled? Are you ready to enroll in Medicare? Baltimore County Senior Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) will set you on the right course. This free and beneficial program is available at the following locations:
- Thursday, June 14 - Catonsville Library
- Tuesday, July 10 - Cockeysville Library
- Wednesday, August 15 - Essex Library
- Thursday, September 13 - Catonsville Library
