Question 1. How did the community of Rodgers Forge get its name?
Answer: In 1800, an Irish immigrant named George Rodgers bought four acres of land from Govane Howard. He set up a blacksmith and cartwright business at the intersection of York and Stevenson Lane. This horse-shoeing enterprise passed through four generations of the Rodgers family. By 1891, the family’s land had increased to 10 acres. The forge served the estates in the area, and the fox hunting set at Elkridge well into the 20th century. A small post office also operated from the premises between 1891 and 1931. When the forge eventually burned in 1946, the land was sold and developers created housing just in time for the immense demands of the 1950’s.
