Jacksonville in Miniature for the Holidays

Senior Center Demonstrates Power of Age in Creating Holiday Display

Towson, Maryland (November 26, 2013) – In 2011, the Jacksonville Senior Center Council was still settling into their one-year-old facility on Sweet Air Road in Phoenix, Maryland. Connected to the new Jacksonville Recreation Council gymnasium, the senior center offered ample parking, outdoor trails, a fitness room and indoor space for expanded activities and classes. However, one of the big challenges was getting the center "on the map" since the relocation. The council was determined to reach out to more seniors in the area, offer new and exciting opportunities to members, and celebrate Jacksonville as both a historic and growing community.

Annual Holiday Train Garden

In January 2011, the idea of an annual holiday train garden was proposed. The concept involved creating a Lionel-size model train display with local Jacksonville landmarks crafted by senior center members. Both experienced and beginner modelers within the senior center lent their talents to the creation of the display to invite the public to visit Jacksonville in Miniature and to learn of the other exciting activities offered at the center.

An Animated Wonderland

Now in its third year, Jacksonville in Miniature has grown into an animated wonderland. Train Team members combine their talents to create replicas of local landmarks, scenes of "life in Jacksonville", and, of course, operating model trains. The 2013 display is also expanding beyond Jacksonville to include the Ocean City boardwalk and the Washington D.C. Mall.

New for adult visitors this year, homeowners will be entered in a free drawing to have their home modeled and included in next year's train garden.
