Fire Department Marks 25th Anniversary of Deadly Shillers Furniture Fire

Towson, Md. (October 21, 2009) - Twenty-five years ago tomorrow, October 22, the Baltimore County Fire Department lost three members in the Shillers Furniture Store fire in the 7400 block of Holabird Avenue in Dundalk. The Fire Service will mark the anniversary with a memorial service honoring the firefighters who lost their lives in one of the two deadliest days in its history.

A brief memorial service honoring the victims of the Shillers fire - FF James Kimbel Jr., FF Walter Barowski and FF Henry Rayner - will be held tomorrow, October 22, at 1 p.m. at the Dundalk Fire Station, 2815 Sollers Point Rd., 21222. The time of the service coincides with the dispatch time of the fire, 1333 hours.

The service will feature remarks by Fire Chief John Hohman, a blessing by a retired captain who was a lieutenant at Station 6 when the fire occurred and the laying of a memorial wreath by Chief Hohman and families of the fallen.

The Shillers fire was the deadliest fire and second deadliest event in Baltimore County Fire Service history. In 1971, four volunteer firefighters in eastern Baltimore County died trying to rescue civilians from flooding that accompanied an intense unnamed storm.
