Towson, Md. (July 15, 2008) - A sanitary sewer overflow of at least four million gallons occurred Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Patapsco pumping station located at 4612 Annapolis Road in Halethorpe. The overflow began at approximately 5 p.m. after an electrical surge and burst a water line inside the station causing the station to flood and to become inoperable.
As of 10 p.m. the station continued to overflow while workers were making repairs and restoring electrical service. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the failure.
The discharge from the station entered the Patapsco River at the Annapolis Road Bridge. The County’s Department of Environmental Protection & Resource Management is monitoring the water quality and will be posting appropriate signage.
The public is advised to avoid contact with the waters of the Patapsco River downstream from the overflow.
