
Towson, Md. (June 30, 2008) — On Wednesday, June 25, 2008, the Maryland Recyclers Coalition (MRC), a well-respected statewide recycling organization, presented Baltimore County’s Department of Public Works, Bureau of Solid Waste Management with its 2008 Outstanding Government Leadership award for its commitment to promoting waste prevention and recycling.
The Bureau accepted the award during MRC’s annual conference at the University of Maryland – College Park campus. This marks the fourth time that Baltimore County’s Bureau of Solid Waste Management has received this prestigious award.
MRC is Maryland’s premier recycling organization, comprised of a broad range of private and public sector members. The Outstanding Government Leadership Award is presented to local, state, or federal government entities for excellence in advocating, implementing, operating, and otherwise promoting waste reduction and/or recycling in Maryland.
This year, the MRC recognized Baltimore County Bureau of Solid Waste Management initiatives such as the following during the past twelve months:
- progress towards a new Ten Year Solid Waste Management Plan;
- a new residential marketing campaign featuring a new theme (“Your ‘Waste,’ Your Responsibility”) and logo;
- the first recycling collection program in a County park (implemented in conjunction with the Department of Recreation & Parks at Meadowood Park in Brooklandville);
- a redesigned and streamlined residents’ drop-off center at the Eastern Sanitary Landfill Solid Waste Management Facility in White Marsh;
- the collection of an average of more than 100,000 pounds per month of household electronics at the Baltimore County Resource Recovery Facility in Cockeysville for reuse / recycling.
