County Senior Centers Highlight Talent of Older Adults with Art Show

Capture the Power of Age

Towson, Maryland (June 26, 2014) – Baltimore County Department of Aging is asking older adults to capture the power of age by joining the Power of Age Art Show and Contest. Each Baltimore County senior center is holding preliminary competitions this summer. Winners from the centers will proceed to the final competition at the Baltimore County Baby Boomer and Senior Expo in October at the Timonium Fairgrounds where over 10,000 people will have a chance to appreciate and vote on their work. Due to the success of the previous contests, the 2014 contest will be expanded to seven categories.

Categories

Drawing (graphite, pastels, calligraphy)

  • Finished piece must be matted only.
  • No picture frames or glass will be accepted.
  • Size limitation is two feet by two feet. 

Handmade Jewelry

  • Finished piece must be on a jewelry display stand.

Handbuilding or Sculpture (from scratch)

  • Use clay or other materials to create a work of art.
  • Size limitation is two feet by two feet.
  • Items will only be placed on a table for display; they will not be hung.

Painting (oil, acrylic, watercolor)

  • Finished piece must be matted only.
  • No picture frames or glass will be accepted.
  • Size limitation is two feet by two feet.  

Photography – Color

  • Finished piece must be matted only.
  • No picture frames or glass will be accepted.
  • Size limitation is two feet by two feet.

Photography – Black and White

  • Finished piece must be matted only.
  • No picture frames or glass will be accepted.
  • Size limitation is two feet by two feet.

Woodcraft

  • Size limitation is two feet by two feet.
  • Items will only be placed on a table for display; they will not be hung. 

Entrance Requirements

To enter the preliminary arts and crafts contest, you must be age 60 or older, your work must have been made since you were age 60 or older, and you must register at a Baltimore County senior center. Artists and crafters may only enter his or her work at one senior center and are limited to two total entries during the contest. Previous winners are not permitted to re-enter the same artwork that won. Along with your entry, include your name, phone number, senior center and title of your entry.

Winners and Prizes

The contests will be held during the summer of 2014 at each senior center. Each senior center will have its own judging and one first-place winner from each category will be announced at each senior center at the conclusion of the contest. For more details about your local senior center's upcoming contest and to reserve your place, contact your center at your earliest convenience.

The first-place senior center winners will be announced on stage at Expo on Thursday, October 23 at 1 p.m. Every participant will receive a ribbon for participating and will be listed in "Senior Digest" newspaper.

These winners will receive four free guest passes to the Expo and earn the opportunity to exhibit his or her work at the Baltimore County Baby Boomer and Senior Expo. Therefore, first-place winners from each senior center will be required to transport his or her artwork to the Expo on Tuesday, October 21 between 2 and 4 p.m. and will need to pick up their work on Thursday, October 23 between 2 and 3 p.m. 

This year, the Expo will be held on Wednesday, October 22 and Thursday, October 23. Expo visitors will be able to vote for their favorite artwork. The winner in each category will receive a $75 gift card and a special ribbon. The category winner and his or her artwork will be featured in the "Senior Digest" newspaper.
