Animal Services Encourage Spaying and Neutering

Officers On Patrol Hand Out Discount Coupons

Towson, Maryland (June 2, 2014) – The Baltimore County Department of Health plans to encourage responsible pet ownership by offering a 50-percent discount on spay and neuter services for cats and dogs. While patrolling communities and providing outreach and public education, Animal Services Officers will distribute half-off coupons to Baltimore County residents who have pets that need to be spayed or neutered.

With the half-off coupon, residents will be able to pay just $25 for a cat and $32.50 for a dog to be spayed or neutered at the shelter. In addition to the surgery, this fee will include, as necessary, a license, rabies immunization and microchip. The coupons, which are on security paper and numbered for tracking purposes, will expire one year from the issued date and are transferable to another Baltimore County resident.

Beneficial to Pets and Residents

Spaying and neutering refers to the surgical procedure, performed by a veterinarian, which renders the animal incapable of reproducing. Globally, this procedure is not only healthy for pets, but it also effectively reduces overpopulation and improves their health and behavior, according to the American Humane Society.

"What better way to help our residents be responsible pet owners than to educate them about the importance of spaying or neutering their pets, equip them with a discount coupon for the service and empower them to reduce the number of unwanted pets in their community," said Dr. Gregory Wm. Branch, Director of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The public spay and neuter program is an expansion of a service that started in October 2013 when the County began spaying and neutering all adoptable animals in the shelter. Since April 14, 2014, when the public program was launched, 62 spay and neuter surgeries have been performed.

"I'm excited about the grassroots approach our Animal Services Officers will be taking to spread the word about our public spay and neuter program and 50-percent discount coupon," said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.

Redeem Coupon and Schedule

To redeem the half-off coupon and schedule a discounted spay or neuter appointment, residents may call 410-887-PAWS (7297) or send an email to and provide their coupon number. Residents are asked to pay their surgery fee with cash or a check.
