Public Safety Day

Baltimore County’s 4th Annual “Public Safety Day” is scheduled Saturday, May 31, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Security Square Mall in Woodlawn. View a video segment streamed online about this event.

The event will be held on the upper parking lot, adjacent to the Super Fresh grocery.

Firefighters show children how powerful a fire hose can be.The event is free and open to the public. If weather permits, the Junior volunteer firefighters will sell snowballs. Security Square Mall’s Auntie Anne’s pretzel shop and other selected food merchants will sell food at the event.

Fun-Filled Family Event Focuses on Safety and Learning

Public Safety Day is an opportunity for the public to get a close-up look at fire and police equipment, including specialty units such as a new Urban Search and Rescue vehicle and hazardous materials units; to talk with firefighters, police officers and emergency medical personnel; and to learn about important home and personal safety issues.

The event will feature a variety of hands-on activities for kids, including squirting a fire hose, participating in a “bucket brigade,” and sitting in a police helicopter. The county’s Junior firefighters will provide face painting. The Fire Service’s “Fire Safety House,” a walk-through trailer that simulates real home fire safety issues, will be available.

Demonstrations of public safety skills are scheduled throughout the event. Visitors will be able to watch heavy rescue squads break apart a vehicle in order to remove a trapped victim and tactical firefighters rappel from a tower ladder. The Police Department’s K-9 dogs will showcase their skills. BGE will join county agencies, providing a crowd-pleasing presentation on electrical safety.

There will be examples of hi-tech equipment used by trained staff for safety at home, at work and at play. Displays include: Put-Out-A-Fire Demo; Police Dogs in Action; Tactical Demos; Smoke House Fire Display; Firefighters Rappelling; Police Marine and Aviation Displays; Antique Fire and Police Cars; Kids Activity Area; and much more.

Information will be provided by Baltimore County Police and Fire Departments; the Baltimore County Volunteer Firemen’s Association; the Baltimore County Sheriff’s Office; the Baltimore County Office of Fair Practices and Community Affairs, and other local and state agencies.
