Tactical Officer Fatally Shot During Warrant Service
Update: A teen surrendered in the Winters Lane August 19 shooting. That shooting led to a search warrant service in Precinct 1/Wilkens where Officer Jason Schneider was fatally shot and another teen was charged with weapons possession.
Baltimore County, Maryland (August 29, 2013) - The man suspected of fatally shooting Baltimore County Police Officer Jason Schneider died at Shock Trauma on August 28. He has been identified as Tevon Smith, 25, of the unit block of Roberts Avenue, 21228.
Preliminary investigation has shown that Officer Schneider's vest stopped several rounds, but that one round travelled underneath his vest, striking him in the back.
Police Officer First Class Jason Schneider, 36, died at Shock Trauma after being shot while serving a warrant in Precinct 1/Wilkens.
Chief Johnson stated, "Jason was extraordinarily experienced. He was a leader within the unit. This is a terrible loss for Baltimore County. His noble work is greatly appreciated, and his bravery and role in the great human experience brought us here today. Low crime rates mean nothing today...all that matters is that we lost a police officer."
Winters Lane Shooting
On August 19 at 10:11 pm, officers responded for a shooting in the 100 block of Winters Lane. A 29-year-old man got into an argument with the suspect, and the suspect shot him. The victim was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.
That investigation led detectives to a home in the unit block of Roberts Avenue on the morning of August 28. Tactical officers, including Officer Schneider, entered the home and encountered several subjects. At least one of the subjects was armed with a handgun and there was an exchange of gunfire. The officer and the suspect were both shot.
Another officer also discharged his weapon. The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
The incident remains under investigation.
Police continue to search for the suspect wanted for the shooting on August 19.
