Double Shooting Ends in Murder/Suicide
Crime Occurred in Precinct 12/North Point
Baltimore County, Maryland ( August 26, 2013) - Just before 6:30 a.m. on August 24, Baltimore County Police and Fire personnel received a call for a disturbance in the 8200 block of Kavanaugh Road, 21222. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found a woman, identified as Shannon Nicklas, 25, suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. Nicklas was transported to a local hospital where she is expected to survive her injuries.
Police learned that a group of people were inside the house when they heard a commotion from the second floor. Nicklas said that she went upstairs to check on her parents and was shot by her father. After being shot, Nicklas ran downstairs and told everyone to leave the house.
Police set up a perimeter around the house and attempted to have the husband and wife exit the residence. After several unsuccessful attempts to contact someone inside, officers decided to enter the house.
Tactical Unit officers located two deceased people on the second floor. Detectives determined that James Wesley Burnham, 51, shot his wife and then shot himself. Burnham’s wife, Terri Ann Burnham, 47, died from multiple gunshot wounds. The deaths have been ruled as a murder/suicide.
