Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Anneslie in Baltimore County.
What did your parents do for a living?
My father was in management of a large retail department store in Baltimore City. My mother was a homemaker.
Where did you go to high school?
St. Paul’s School for Boys
Who was your role model growing up?
Lewis D. Clark, a Master at St. Paul’s, who returned to teaching after an extended tour of duty in the Navy.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
As far back as I can remember (and that is rather far) I wanted to be a lawyer. Had I been better at math I would have probably become an engineer.
Do you have a favorite sports memory from your youth?
The sports memory that is indelibly etched in my mind is the day we lost a lacrosse game after winning 86 consecutive games over a six or seven year period. The loss was to another private school whose name I will refrain from mentioning. I certainly have many happy memories for winning had become a habit.
What is your favorite food?
Lobster!
What is your favorite kind of music?
I studied at Peabody. My favorite type of music is classical.
What is your favorite movie?
I don’t go to movies; I let them come to me. I recall that I liked Gone with the Wind, The Four Seasons, and The Thorn Birds
What do you do to relax?
I work to relax. I love to work—at my desk, on my lawn, my house and in my woodworking shop. I read for knowledge. No novels, thank you! My own imagination is quite adequate.
What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is helping others. If you don’t help others, how can you justify your existence?
What is the best advice you have ever received that you would like to pass along to the younger generation?
Before you speak, ask yourself “Is it true, is it kind, is it necessary?”.
