(October 11, 2013, updated 2:10 p.m.) - This morning, detectives were conducting a criminal investigation in the area of Pulaski Highway and Route 43. They observed an armed robbery suspect leaving the Colony motel, in the 11100 block of Pulaski Highway, in a 1996 Toyota Camry. Detectives waited until the suspect stopped at a traffic light and approached the vehicle on foot to take him into custody.

The detectives saw the suspect reach for a handgun, which has been recovered by police. Fearing for their safety, the two detectives discharged their firearms.

The suspect pulled away, striking two police vehicles. He was able to drive to the intersection of Pulaski Highway and Middle River Road, where he was involved in a crash. The suspect's vehicle struck a civilian's vehicle, and the suspect bailed out of his car. No one else was in the suspect's Camry, and there were no injuries to occupants of the civilian vehicle.

The suspect was taken into custody and found to have suffered a non life-threatening gunshot wound. The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment and has been released. He is now in police custody.

Around noon today, tactical officers and detectives served a search warrant on a room at the Colony motel in connection with this ongoing investigation. One person inside the motel room was taken into custody and is being interviewed by police.

No charges have been filed at this time, and no additional information can be released about the suspect until charges are filed. This remains an active, ongoing investigation, and as a result BCoPD cannot release details about suspected criminal activity involving this suspect.

The police-involved shooting remains under investigation. Detectives continue to gather physical evidence and conduct interviews. The two detectives involved in the shooting are a 29-year veteran and a 25-year veteran of BCoPD, both assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division. They have been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
