Baltimore County Olympian Michael Phelps

by Kevin Kamenetz

Greatness is something that doesn’t come along very often.  When you get to witness it first hand, it is pretty exciting, While true throughout life, it’s particularly true in the world of sports, where years of preparation and dedication all have to come together to make such greatness possible, let alone a reality.

Throughout my life I’ve been fortunate to see more than a few of these special moments on the fields of Memorial Stadium, Camden Yards, and M&T Bank Stadium.  What has taken place this week in London is now etched forever in my memory alongside Johnny U, Brooks, Eddie, Ray, and Cal.

Is it easy to win just one Olympic medal? I don’t think so. . Just imagine how hard it is then to win 19 of them. Yesterday in London, Baltimore County’s own Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time. That is an incredible achievement, one made all the more special for us through Michael’s roots in Rodgers Forge.

Since bursting onto the Olympic stage in Athens in 2004, Michael has been a source of pride for people throughout the country, but particularly for those us in Baltimore County, who walk the same streets where he played and swim in the same pool where he swam lap after lap after lap.

Greatness is indeed a rare thing, but when it come from that place you call home, it is really something special. Congratulations Michael, you’ve done something remarkable, and the best part of it is that we know you’re not finished yet. Not by a long shot.
