Summer is here, and here with it are beach vacations, sleep-away camps, and Fourth of July picnics. The season is busy, but somehow an abundance of free time always wedges its way in between the events marked on the calendar. Students with eight weeks off from school sometimes find themselves glued to the television with nothing else to do all day. The warm weather and longer days make it so even adults who are still occupied from nine to five find some extra time on their hands. If you are trying to find a way to wile away your spare summer hours, look no further. There are tons of art, music and theatre performances here in Baltimore County all summer long.
Arts and sciences organizations in Baltimore County offer a diverse group of programs that will help make the most of your child’s summer. Summertime Crickets, a program by the Children’s Chorus of Maryland, introduces children ages four and five to the world of music. Kaleidoscope! Arts Camp in Catonsville channels another area of creativity, focusing on visual arts. This two-week day camp offers programs for elementary, middle, and high school-aged students looking to be creative and have fun!
Another great family outing is a night at the theatre with Cockpit in Court’s summer season, presented at CCBC Essex. The company will celebrate forty years of theatre with five diverse shows: Gypsy, A Murder is Announced, Me and My Girl, Social Security, and Seussical Jr. Whether you’re looking to see a musical or a play or whether you are bringing the kids or having a grown-up night, Cockpit in Court is a summer treat for any occasion.
If you are looking for more theatre, the annual Summer Playwright’s Festival presented by Open Space Arts is a Baltimore County tradition that you will not want to miss. Open Space Arts is stationed in Reisterstown and holds their big summer show the first two weekends in August. The festival features several short plays written by inspired members of the community. Local actors bring these original pieces to life on Open Space Arts’ charming outdoor stage. The Summer Playwright’s Festival is an entertaining and unique theatre experience that the whole family can enjoy.
The Lurman Woodland Theatre in Catonsville hosts a free concert series with performances every Saturday and Sunday from June 1-August 25.
