American Education Week. Seriously? How lame! I was glad my parents didn’t always come into my school. At least that’s what I thought. That is, until the 7th grade when my stepfather surprised me by showing up because my mother had to work. Originally, when he came I was pink with embarrassment, but looking back I am happy that I got to share my school experience with him. It helped strengthen our relationship.

American Education Week in Baltimore County happens once every year in November. This year it is taking place on November 11th- November 17th. As I have grown older, I have a newfound appreciation for the importance of this week. At first, I was worried about how my stepfather would interact with my teachers. What would he ask them about me? What would they tell him? I wasn’t alone in these worries.

Every student feels differently about this special week. I think most kids want their parents to come and see what it’s like to be a student today; even if they kind of dread being followed around all day. Either way, American Education Week is always a good way for the parents to be more involved in their child’s learning experience. Despite all of my fears, when my stepfather left my school that day, we were both flushed with pride—a memory I won’t forget.
