Temporary Protective Order / Interim Order
- Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Go to District or Circuit Court, ask the Civil Clerk's Desk for Petition of Protection. Complete the form and present the information to the Judge. After business hours, weekends and holidays go to the Court Commissioner to get an Interim Order. The Commissioner will inform you of the date / location of your second hearing.

Remedies under this law can include:
- Order the abuser to stop the violence
- Remove the abuser from the home
- Give temporary child custody
- Order offender / victim to attend domestic violence counseling

Emergency walk-in legal clinic for victims of domestic violence is located in Circuit Court. Provides free Protective Order legal advice and representation.

Filing Criminal Charges
Go to the Commissioner's Office (at the location above). If the Commissioner refuses to charge the abuser, call the State's Attorney office to have them review the case.

To Request Court Accompaniment for Criminal Cases
A court advocate may accompany you to court for a domestic violence case and introduce you to the State's Attorney and assist you in navigating the court process.
