This division reviews, investigates, formally charges, and prosecutes felony offenses including sex offenses with adults as victims, sexual child abuse, and physical child abuse.
This specialized group consists of three attorneys, an investigator, and a law clerk. The attorneys have received training in prosecuting these very sensitive cases and are available to consult with other lawyers in the office about trial strategies and appropriate case disposition. They also work closely with the detectives from the police department who are assigned to the various units investigating these crimes. The attorneys in the division handle most of their own cases from the time of charging through sentencing.
The investigator works closely with detectives and social workers in interviewing the victims and gathering information about pending cases. She also assists the trial attorneys in preparing the victim to testify in court, and provides support for victims and their families throughout the court proceedings.
The law clerk is responsible for meeting with the police in every charged case, preparing the charging documents, and assisting the attorneys with legal research in these areas.
