Inclement Weather Policy

Current Status:

November 21, 2009 12:36 AM

Weekdays

When schools are closed by snow, ice or other severe weather conditions all day or before regular dismissal time, all activities scheduled for that afternoon and evening inside school-recreation centers and Recreation and Parks buildings will be cancelled.(View the current Baltimore County Board of Education Status)

Weekends/Holidays

In the event of a severe weather event when school is not in session, recreation programs will be cancelled whenever the snow emergency plan is in effect.

The Department is registered with WBAL (1090 AM) Radio. Staff and participants are advised to listen for updated information.

When May Recreation Programs Resume After A Closing For Inclement Weather?

  • The use of school-recreation centers and Recreation and Parks buildings for recreation purposes will proceed according to schedule the day following the early closing, unless schools remain closed because of inclement weather conditions.
  • If a closing occurred on a weekend or school holiday recreation programs may re-open provided:
    • The snow emergency plan has been lifted  AND
    • The local full-time recreation and park staff has received approval to re-open the particular site. Contact your local community office to see if your site has been approved for reopening.
  • When schools are closed more than one day, as a result of inclement weather, programs held at separate recreation and parks buildings and community centers (not at schools) may re-open providing:
    • The snow emergency plan has been lifted  AND
    • The local full-time recreation and park staff has received approval to re-open the particular site. Contact your local community office to see if your site has been approved for reopening.
  • When schools are closed more than three days, as a result of inclement weather,  programs held at school recreation centers may re-open providing:
    • The snow emergency plan has been lifted  AND
    • The local full-time recreation and park staff has received approval to re-open the particular site. Contact your local community office to see if your site has been approved for reopening.

Licensed Day Care Programs In School Recreation Centers

  • When the opening of school is delayed, the opening of the program will be the same as the opening of the school.
  • When schools close early, the program will close at the same time as the closing of the school, regardless of whether the program is situated in a school or a community center.
  • When schools are closed more than three days, as a result of inclement weather, licensed day care programs may be re-open providing:
    • The snow emergency plan has been lifted  AND
    • The local full-time recreation and park staff has received approval to re-open the particular site. Contact your local community office to see if your site has been approved for reopening.

Snow Emergency Plan Status

When the Snow Emergency Plan is in effect, there will be an announcement on the upper right corner of the County Home page.

Field Playability Guidelines

To play or not to play, that is the question. Field playability has always been a subjective issue and everyone seems to have a different opinion on the matter.  To insure countywide consistency in determining whether or not a field or diamond is fit for play, the Department developed these criteria.
