Over the past two years community and business groups in Towson have drafted a blueprint for a “more walkable Towson.” The plan includes two ingredients:
an abundance of attractive, desirable places to walk, and
a roadway/walkway infrastructure that is friendly to pedestrians.
The idea has been tagged “The Walkable Towson Plan.” Learn more about the concept and its development at www.baltimorecountymd.gov/go/walkabletowson
Planning groups have developed the Walkable Towson Traffic Implementation Plan, which focuses on roadway elements. Top priority was given to changes needed to strengthen Towson’s downtown business district by making walking, shopping and visiting destinations a more pleasant experience. To that end the County’s Department of Public Works worked this year with the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) to make significant changes to the Towson Roundabout and to parking along York Road.
In late March SHA began putting up “Trail Blazer “ signs along York Road indicating routes around the core of Towson to the Baltimore Beltway. Additional signs were scheduled to be placed on County roads in the area in April to encourage the use of alternate routes.
In June, after schools close for the summer, SHA will begin reconfiguring the Towson Roundabout, at the confluence of York, Joppa, Allegheny and Delaney Valley Roads. The roundabout will be narrowed in places and traffic patterns will be changed to slow traffic. Entry from Allegheny will be reduced.
Following temporary changes to the Roundabout, the State will designate parking areas along York Road, between the Roundabout and Towsontown Boulevard, with one-hour parking during working hours.
