Safe Speed - Automated Enforcement Program

On September 8, 2009, the Baltimore County Council passed legislation authorizing the use of speed cameras in school zones in Baltimore County-Bill 61-09

Passage of this important public safety legislation, authorizes Baltimore County to implement a speed camera program in up to 15 school zones across the County. Baltimore County will install the cameras and implement the program as soon as a vendor is selected to monitor traffic around school zones, and record the license tags of those vehicles exceeding the posted speed – and violating the law.

The Police Department wants to have an open dialog with the citizens of the County, and this web page is part of that dialog. It is meant to tell drivers how the program will work, and the County wants to hear residents’ thoughts and concerns about the cameras.

A Message from Chief Jim Johnson:

The speed camera program has one goal  public safety. It is meant to protect our school children and other residents from drivers who violate the law. By their comments at community meetings, in their e-mail messages, and through their contact with members of the Police Department, members of the public are demanding safe streets in Baltimore County. This automated enforcement will help the Police Department accomplish that goal.

The following locations have been chosen after an extensive review of data related to traffic safety:

  • Lansdowne High School
  • Arbutus Middle School
  • Woodlawn High School
  • Woodlawn Middle School/Woodmoor Elementary School
  • Milford Mill Academy
