Beware of Deception Burglaries and Home Improvement Scams
Elderly are Frequently Targeted
Now that warm weather is here, home improvement scams and deception burglaries will be on the rise. The pattern usually starts in March and continues through the summer. Here are some methods you should be aware of:
Deception Burglaries
The suspect may distract the person and enter the home by saying any of the following:
I'm looking for a lost pet
I need a drink of water
I'm looking for a place to rent
I need to use your phone
I need to check your electric meter or water pressure
Home Improvement Scams
Home improvement scams have included asphalt paving, driveway or roof sealing, landscaping and termination. Some examples include:
Offering free inspections
No business contract or vague contract
Poor quality work
Up front cash payment or extorted higher payment
Prevention Tips
Never allow anyone inside your home without an appointment or proper identification. If you are suspicious of the identification, call and verify the information.
Only do business with licensed home improvement companies.
Keep a check on neighbors, particularly the elderly, and spread the word about prevention tips.
If a stranger wants to use your phone for an emergency, offer to make the call for them. Do Not let them inside.
Immediately report any suspicious activity to the police.
