Explorer Post 9907

The Cockeysville Precinct Police Explorer Post 9907 has been in existence for over 20 years. The Police Explorer program, a part of the Boy Scouts of America is co-educational and is designed for students who want to consider a career in the law enforcement field. Students must be at least 14 years of age, in junior high school and have not yet reached their 21st birthday. The Explorers attend two meetings each month in the evenings at the precinct. At these meetings members will learn about the many aspects of police work receiving basic instruction in areas such as criminal law, investigations, crime prevention, traffic control, traffic law, accident investigation, and other related topics. Members will be issued uniforms and have to conform to a set of basic rules and regulations.

Explorers participate in various activities such as ride-alongs, safety days, traffic control, security, and communications. In our precinct, Explorers have assisted at the annual Maryland State Fair detail, Shawan Downs Steeplechase detail, Constellation Energy Golf Classic detail,  Susan G.Komen Race for the Cure detail, Baltimore Symphony at Oregon Ridge Park detail, to name just a few.

As each Explorer gains time and knowledge by participating in the program, they will be eligible to earn promotion in rank due to the military structure. This is the same structure that is used by the Police Department. Factors taken into consideration would include their service record, training, leadership potential, job knowledge, and test completion.

Every two years our Explorers have the opportunity to attend the National Law Enforcement Explorer Conference (NLEEC). At this conference, the Explorers are able to meet and interact with their counterparts from across the United States and from foreign countries such as Great Britain. They also have the opportunity to attend training seminars and to compete against each other in the many law enforcement related disciplines. In 2008, the conference will be held at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado from July 21st thru July 26th.

One of the highlights of the Explorer Program is the Ride-A-Long Program. Once an Explorer has met certain qualifications, they will have the ability to ride along with the precinct patrol officers to get a first hand view of what police work is all about. From the insight gained by riding along, several of our Explorers after reaching 21 years of age, have gone on to successfully complete the Police Academy and make police work their career.

At the Cockeysville Precinct, our Explorer Post 9907, meets on the first and third Thursday of each month in the evenings. The Precinct Explorer Advisor is Off. Jen Arnett, assigned to the Community Outreach Team. For further information, Off. Arnett may be contacted directly at 410-887-1863 or by e-mail at: jarnett@baltimorecountymd.gov

For detailed information on program requirements and the application process, please also visit the Police Department's Explorer home page.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You

The Longaberger Basket Bingo held in conjunction with the Franklin Precinct Explorer Post 9903, on May 9, 2008 at the Vista Room was a great success. Over $ 2,000 in funding was raised to help cover their expenses for the National Law Enforcement Explorer Conference in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Explorers are very appreciative of the support received from everyone who attended and wish to extend their heartfelt thanks.
