Precinct 2 Memorial Garden

in partnership with the Woodlawn Police Community Relations Council

This Gateway Sign was made for and donated to the precinct by the
Methodist Board of Child Care Woodshop Program

Read on to see why and how this lovely Place came to be...

The Story of Our Garden:

On April 18, 1991 the dedication and grand opening of the new Precinct 2 building was held.
At that time the grass plot in front of of the station was simply that; a plain grass plot.

The New Precinct 2 when it opened.

On September 27, 1997 Precinct 2 lost a beloved 30 year veteran, Officer Curtis Morsberger.  Officer Morsberger passed away as a result of burns sustained in an off-duty hit and run accident.

In October 1998 Craig Morsberger, Curt's son, planted 3 trees in the grass plot in memory of his Dad and 3 other active duty officers the department also lost that year.  Craig plated the memory trees at Precinct 2 and also at Pricenct 3 and headquarters as his Eagle Scout Project.

...With the Addition of the Memory Trees

We are most appreciative of eagle scout Craig Morsberger's start, because he inspired us to continue to improve the plain grass plot.

In October 1999 the Precinct 2 - Police Community Relations Council added a maple tree to the area and made plans to add flowers in the Spring of 2000.

On February 7, 2000 Precinct 2 suffered the tragic "in the line of duty" loss of Sergeant Bruce Prothero.

Sergeant Bruce Prothero

At that time the Police Community Relations Council was in the process of producing a booklet - "The Millennium Commemorative and Reference Guide". The publication was dedicated to "Our Fallen Hero" and a two page spread was added in Sergeant Prothero's "Honor and Memory".

In our group's pursuit of a printing sponsor, we were offered the donation of the start of additional garden improvements by Home Depot of Catonsville. In July 2000, Home Depot arrived with a crew and planted the hedges, trees by the bench, and many other plants. They also placed the bench, bird bath, and stepping stones in the garden. Their crew was assisted by members of the Police Community Relations Council and several police officers.

After Home Depot of Catonsville got us started

The remainder of the additions you see in the garden today, among them, the path, the badge, lighting, edging, and bench patio, were made possible through donations and from the sale of our booklet; the proceeds from which we earmarked for improvements to the garden.

We offer our sincere gratitude to everyone who purchases our Booklet or contributed to our cause. Special acknowledgment to:

Home Depot of Catonsville who gave us our start

We also offer sincere gratitude to our members, community volunteers, and police officers who have spent many hours working in this dirt to make this garden possible. In the Fall of 2000 they planted over 600 bulbs to produce blooming spring flowers. We hope to make continuous additions and improvements to the garden in the future.

We hope that the Precinct 2 Memorial Garden will provide a peaceful and serene setting for our officers and the families of those we have "Loved and Lost".

Our goal was to establish a perpetual sign in their

"Honor and Memory"
and to
"Never Let Them Be Forgotten".

Spend some time in the garden and say a prayer for all our officers who have and do put their lives on the line to keep all of us safe.

ADDITIONALLY...

Memorial Services sponsored by the PCR were held for both officers.

April 1999 PCR Meeting honors Officer Morsberger

Officer Steven Dyke reads a poem called "The Brother I Called Curt" that
he wrote in tribute for the history book and to his long time partner.

Officer Barb Davis gives her speech as she presents the family with a scrap book

Sergeant McGuire gives what she described as the hardest speech of her
life about her personal contact with Curt and what he stood for in
prelude  to the presentation of the memorial.

Mrs. Morsberger stands in awe after being asked to come forward
and unveil the Memorial to her husband. She said that she would find
comfort in knowing that he would not be forgotten and we tried to
assure her of that. She received a small replica of the stained glass
panel to remind her that it will hang here forever.
