Recovered stolen or lost bikes without
owner information. Bikes will be sold
at County auction
Each year thousands of bikes are stolen throughout Baltimore County. Nearly 1,400 bikes were reported stolen in Baltimore County between January and October last year with only 300 being returned to their owners.
To guard against bicycle theft, the Baltimore County Police Department recommends:
- When purchasing a bike, keep the receipt, and take a clear color photo of the bike. Keep the photo and receipt in a safe place.
- Record the make, model and serial number of the bike. The serial number is usually located on the rear wheel or beneath the bottom bracket where the pedals attach. Keep this information in a safe place with your color photo.
- Engrave your bike with a driver's license number-either yours or your parent's. Make sure to engrave the number in one or more places on the bike including the frame.
- Insure the bike against theft. Check your homeowner's policy to see if coverage is included.
- Lock up your bicycle. Police recommend using a theft-proof chain, cable or bar and attach it to a sturdy fixed object. When away from home try to lock the bike in a well lit area.
- Don't leave your bike unattended in your yard even for a second. Park it in the garage and close and lock the door.
- Don't hide your bike in the bushes, thieves know where to look.
- Don't let people you don't know ride your bike, they may not come back.
- Above all, don't fight back if someone tries to take your bike. Instead remember what the thief looks like and direction he/she went. Then call 911.
Register your bike with the Baltimore County Police
If you see a police officer, ask him for a form to register your bike or go to the nearest Police Station to pick up a Bicycle Data registration Form or display and print the Bicycle Registration Form here. (PDF). Complete it, and return it to the nearest Baltimore County Police Station. Upon returning the form you will receive a Baltimore County Police Registration sticker that goes on the bike to indicate the bike is registered.
Please make sure all spaces on the form are filled in. We will then enter the information into the County Police computer file. For further information contact Officer Charles J, Bury Jr. at 410-744-1584 or e-mail pc01cot@yahoo.com.
