BCoPD Academy Training

Overview

The police academy is a 27-week academic, physical, and practical training program, which introduces recruits to a career in law enforcement.  It is a non-residential program located in Dundalk, Maryland.  The academy is paramilitary in nature and challenges recruits to develop self-discipline, perform under stressful situations, and focus on teamwork.  Upon graduation from the Baltimore County Police Academy, you will be among the most highly trained officers in the country and part of a family of motivated and proud law enforcement officers.
 
Hours

Unless otherwise directed by the Commanding Officer, the working day for the recruits is 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Recruits may be required to work scheduled evenings or weekends as directed by their Commanding Officer.

Courses

All courses administered by the Recruit Training Team are with the approval of the Maryland Police Training Commission.  Some courses taught in the Police Academy are as follows:

  • Physical Conditioning
  • Simulated Technical Operational Police Scenarios
  • Interactive Scenario Training

  • Firearms Training
  • Report Writing

Field Training

Upon completion of the police academy, new officers will be assigned to one of Baltimore County's ten precincts for field training.  Officers will complete eight weeks of on the job training, accompanied by an experienced field training officer.  Upon successful completion of field training, the new officer will receive a permanent assignment.  The hours will vary based on the shift assignment of their field training officer.
