Essex-Middle River UDAT
Urban Design Assistance Team (UDAT) Program

Fall 2004
A UDAT, working with Peter Batchelor, took place in Essex-Middle River during the Fall of 2004. The team conducted an intensive six-day workshop, engaging all members of the community in creating a vision for the future. The boundaries were based on the Essex-Middle River Community Conservation Plan (1996) study area—an area stretching from Philadelphia Road on the northern boundary, east to Back River, south to Turkey Point, and east to Bowleys Quarters Road.  However, the team analyzed this area and chose to focus more on the parts of Essex surrounding Eastern Boulevard with an emphasis on the 400 and 500 blocks, the Back River Neck Road corridor including Josenhan's Corner and Country Ridge Shopping Center, the Middle River Bridge and triangle park area, Dark Head Cove, and possibilities for the GSA Depot and the gateway to Middle River at the planned terminus of MD 43.  The Team’s recommendations focused on connections throughout the Essex-Middle River area; the gateway to Essex and historic downtown Essex; the Back River Neck Road corridor; Kingsley Park; the Middle River bridge and its surroundings.
